It’s always great to see Manchester hit the headlines for something positive. So tuning in to BBC Breakfast this morning, I was rather chuffed to hear that our city has been named as the ‘Greatest Sporting City in the UK’, according to research from ESPN and the Universities of Gloucestershire and Bath.
This news made me happy because I have roots in Manchester, not to mention it is home to the greatest football team in the world – that’s Manchester City in case it needs questioning (can you tell I was brought up in a City mad household and the boss is a Blue?!). There are dozens of other reasons why I think Manchester is worthy of this title…from boasting two of the Premier League’s top teams and producing a host of sporting legends from rugby, cricket and cycling to being home to some of the world’s best stadia (Old Trafford Football, Emirates Old Trafford Cricket Ground, the Etihad Stadium and the Manchester Velodrome).
At Bird, sport is close to our hearts; it is part of our DNA and it’s a big part of what we do. We’ve been lucky enough to work alongside some superb talent, including Dame Sarah Storey, the most decorated female Paralympian cyclist (she hails from Manchester too), Olympic Gold Medallist Joanna Rowsell, snooker champion Ronnie O’Sullivan and marathon legend Ron Hill.
In the past couple of years I’ve worked on some amazing sporting projects with Canterbury, the England Rugby Kit suppliers, helping to launch the Team England kit for last year’s Commonwealth Games with Kukri, and managing the relationship with Stuart Pearce and Rileys Sports Bar throughout the 2014 football World Cup, to name a few.
I also work closely with Manchester based Sports Tours International, who organise travel packages and entries to the NYC and Berlin Marathon, the Tour de France and a host of other fantastic sporting events across the world. I was in my element last year when I was given the opportunity to fly out to Lanzarote with our client Club La Santa and spend a week taking part in the 30 different sports they have on offer.
I’ll let you into a little secret; I haven’t always loved sport quite as much as I do today. It was probably getting involved in the Decathlon We Love Manchester and the City of Salford 10K events which helped discover my love of running. The atmosphere during the event and the buzz you get from finishing the race is exhilarating. I’m probably not the only one who will say there’s nothing better than a run to clear your head, plus I’ve come up with some of my best PR ideas for clients whilst I’ve been jogging round Heaton Park! Although, I dare you to ask me how much I love running after I attempt my first ever marathon next year!
