With many more people spending time at home these last few months due to the world pandemic, social media use saw a tremendous surge in 2020, with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok all being boosted in usage numbers by up to a whopping 50%.
But given that things are hopefully set to return to some kind of normality in 2021, will we see these numbers continue? And what else does the world of social media hold in store for us in the next 12 months?
Here are just a few of our predicted trends for 2021:
While the overall number of social media users increases year-on-year as more people sign up to various platforms, we are expecting a slight decrease in the number of users who spend a considerable amount of time on social, simply as a result of the spike in numbers in 2020.
While many people were spending several hours a day on social media in 2020, with the world (hopefully) returning to normal in 2021 and with more people heading back to full-time work, the number of hours individual users spend on these sites and apps is expected to fall.
Facebook Advertising Boost
With Facebook user numbers and hours through the roof in 2020, businesses and marketers seized the opportunity with both hands and fully invested in Facebook advertising this year. 2020 was, without question, the best time to have your brand, product or service shown on Facebook, simply because there was a much larger number of eyes catching your ad. But, will the same be said for 2021?
Well, if the numbers are anything to go by, yes! While regular Facebook usage is expected to fall, as we’ve discussed, the solid results from Facebook advertising we’ve seen during the pandemic have given many people more of an incentive to finally take the plunge and place ads on the world’s most widely-used social media site. So if you end up seeing a much larger number of ads in 2021, now you know why!
Homemade Photo/Video Content Boost
People being stuck at home for the majority of the year forced many people to think outside the box when it came to producing their content in 2020. With fewer resources at their disposal, some chose to do away with their usual strategy and immerse themselves in the world of independent content creation.
After all, at the end of the day, almost everyone has access to the tools they need to create reasonably good photo and video content nowadays! Phones have better cameras than ever, tripods are relatively cheap, lighting can be created using whatever you have to hand, the list goes on!
That’s exactly what we’ve seen in 2020, and given the success many have seen using this method, there’s no reason this won’t continue into 2021.
Businesses Up Their Social Media Game
As we’ve discussed, many businesses have finally seen the impact that good social media marketing and strategy can have in the year 2020.
