We Love MCR Sporting Legends Awards Events
The inaugural We Love MCR Sporting Legend awards were held in May 2013.
The event celebrated sports men and women who have left a sporting legacy in the City of Manchester and to raise vital funds for the City’s charity, We Love MCR.
We Love MCR, formerly known as the Lord Mayor of Manchester’s charity, aims to improve the lives and life chances of Manchester People.
Bird is actively involved in We Love MCR, and created the We Love MCR Sporting Legends campaign to celebrate the sports men and women who have left a sporting legacy in the City of Manchester and to raise vital funds for the City’s charity.
What we did
The event was held at Manchester’s Hilton Hotel, and welcomed more than 300 guests including celebrities attend such as athlete Dame Sarah Storey, MCFC legend Bryan Robson and cricketer Clive Lloyd.
The evening was hosted by BBC’s Mike Bushell and Louise Minchin and included a sit down meal, an auction of unique sport collectable items, and award presentations.
Bird secured a media partnership with the Manchester Evening News. Manchester Evening News readers had the opportunity to nominate their legend from four decades, including the 1970’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. A shortlist was then put to the readers vote.
Award winners on the night included former Belle Vue speedway hero Peter Collins, Manchester United legend Bryan Robson, ex Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson, former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton and 11-time Paralympic gold medallist Dame Sarah Storey.
Money raised on the evening was donated to the We Love MCR Charity and used to support local community projects.
The event was support by the Manchester Evening News, and highlights were shown on the ITV evening news. http://www.itv.com/news/granada/topic/mcr-awards/
