Bird and Sport have gone hand in hand since the very beginning

Chris Bird, our Founder and CEO, has considerable experience in the world of professional Sport having held several significant positions of influence in the sporting world, including board positions with Manchester City Football Club and Lancashire County Cricket Club. With this insight as to how sports organisations operate we at Bird have become really tuned in to what communications are required for our clients in this sector.

Lancashire County Cricket Club

From the start, Chris knew he wanted to work with clients in sectors that interested and inspired him personally – do what you know and love, right? – so the question of whether or not to get involved in sport was an easy decision.

Over the past 30 years, Bird has worked with a whole host of different sports clients, each with their own unique set of challenges and communications needs. But it all started when Chris was still working in the world of radio, alongside legendary West Indies Cricketer Sir Clive Lloyd who was also on the board of Trans World Communications. But this was only the start of many sporting relationships that would lead to many, many fruitful exploits into the world of pro sports…

Boxing, Cricket, Golf, Rugby, Snooker, and more – Bird has worked within these sports in various capacities over the years, ranging from grassroots right through to elite sports.

England Boxing

For example, Bird is currently handling the communications for England Boxing; We assisted with the organisation and communications of their major annual event, the National Amateur Championships, the most recent of which was held at Manchester Central. The organisation is where young amateur boxers have the chance to hone their skills on a national stage and win amateur championship titles, potentially en-route to competing in more global competitions like the Olympic games, or even turning professional.

Bird has also made our mark in the professional boxing ranks, working with Barry Hearn and Matchroom and also the legendary boxing promoter Frank Warren in the lead up to numerous boxing events.

All Schools Programme

Bird was thrilled to work with the All Schools program (managed by the Rugby Football Union), in which Prince Harry himself acts as a patron. The Prince is clearly a lover of all things sport and is regularly seen at some of the biggest sporting events the world over. Including the Commonwealth Games, which also share a link with Bird… The Bird team handled the communications for Kukri Sports, the official kit provider for Team England at the Commonwealth Games which were held in the city of Glasgow in 2017.

Sports brands and retail has played a huge part in our story and our success, again dating back a number of years for us. Bird has worked with Canterbury, Diadora, Adidas, Ron Hill UK but most notably, Bird has also been heavily involved with sports retail powerhouse JD Sports since 1990 assisting with the communications needs, plus various other aspects of their business, and offering advice about their movements in regards to Public Relations, esports and CSR. Chris also spent over a decade on the PLC board of JD. Bird still maintains a great working relationship with JD to this day.

But even if there are no direct sports involved, if it’s sports-related you can trust Bird will be in the right place to get the job done! Even the Sporting Legends Dinner in aid of the We Love MCR Charity, was a first-of-its-kind event which has since been replicated in both Manchester and around the country, was organised and promoted by Bird, and played host to some of the most iconic names in British sports history.

Back in the day Chris even had the pleasure of sharing a football pitch with a number of sporting icons too! Whilst playing with the ‘Piccadilly Attackers’ he was joined by such huge names as Stuart Pearson and Sir Bobby Charlton, with Sir Alex Ferguson stood on the sidelines watching on. Talk about pressure!

So why Bird? Look at our credentials! A whole world of communications at the highest level. The breadth of what we’ve done from local, community engagement right up to the top of a sport or entertainment or business, we’ve done it all.

The world of sport might be continuously evolving, but Bird will be on-hand to follow it every step of the way and use our extensive knowledge and experience to deliver a truly impactful and memorable experience for our clients.
