Bird Blog: Week two of Olympic Fever! - 10th August 2012
What another fantastic week of sporting events the London 2012 Olympics has brought us! Our athletes have notched up an incredible 25 gold medals and we’ve been maintaining a respectable third place on the medal table for the past few days. Team Bird has loved every minute of the Olympics so far and Team GB has been doing us proud!
But this weekend we’ll be saying goodbye to the Olympics, and with the closing ceremony just two days away, the focus is turning to what the future holds for Team GB. With the huge profile the athletes have gained during the games it’s no surprise that some of the biggest brands are falling over themselves to offer sponsorship to our new national heroes, and we can’t help but think that their PR and management teams must be having a very VERY busy week!
But it looks like it’s not just sport some of our athletes will be sticking to. Gymnast Louis Smith has already been approached by fashion and music bosses, who have spotted potential in the London poster boy. Now we haven’t heard Louis’ singing voice, but we reckon he won’t have any trouble when it comes to those energetic performances on stage!
With Team GB celebrating their most successful Olympics for 100 years, talk is growing about how best to build on the legacy and inspire the next generation into sport. It’s great to see so many of our Olympics stars inspiring young athletes and a survey has even shown music stars and footballers are being replaced as role models for youngsters.
As we mentioned in our blog last week, the rise of social media has played a big part in shaping this year’s Olympics - Team GB alone have been mentioned more than 4.4m times on Twitter since the opening ceremony. Wow!
We think this week has been a good week all round. Every day we’ve been waking up to a lot more positive news stories than usual - and you can’t help but feel in a better mood for it.
And on that positive note, we’re off to get ready for the weekend’s big Olympic finale. Go Team GB! After two weeks of Olympic fever, it’s back to reality next week and we’ll be talking about what else is happening in the world…at least until the Paralympics start!
